Hi, my name is Trance and I think the same thing. I even wrote about it on my blog at http://www.trancecommunity.com/Forum/ a while ago. Anyway, I'm not necessarily into this stuff but Harvesting Rainwater from a composition (asphalt) roof Biological sand water filters and roof water harvesting just happened to grab my attention there in the sidebar, while I was browsing through.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask this but I don't suppose you know if I can take sand from our beach and put it in an aquarium with a red claw crab? Additionally I don't suppose you know how would i clean the sand before putting it in the aquarium? i perform weekly water changes and vacuum up the gravel, how do i vacuum the sand? also is having sand better than having gravel? Can you think of anything else i need to do with sand that i wouldn't do with gravel? Thanks

Greetings!

I want to first off and say thank you for not only keeping up the SSF website, but for this blog which will enable people to interact and share ideas about SSF.

I am in the process of building a few of these filters, but my biggest challenge is finding the right sand. I have made numerous phone calls and countless e-mails looking for silica sand. However, I had a break through once I contacted a local Cemex office which informed me that they would be able to help me out and that they'd put me in touch with a salesperson that could answer specific questions.

So my advice for those on the hunt: contact local AGGREGATE suppliers. If you live in a large city, such as Houston, there are PLENTY, especially for all the growing construction needs.

One question however,

What is the exact mesh size for .15, .25., and .35 sand?
